Acid Soil-Soil with a pH lower than 7.0 is an acidic soil. (A soil pH higher than 7.0 is alkaline) Basically, pH is a measure of the amount of lime (calcium) contained in your soil.

Acre-An acre of property is a measurement of land totaling 43,560 square feet.

Aerate-Loosening or puncturing the soil to increase water penetration.

Aeration- The process of removing plugs of soil to relieve soil compaction and allowing oxygen, water and nutrients to enter the ground.

Alkaline Soil-A soil with a pH higher than 7.0 is an alkaline soil. (a soil pH lower than 7.0 is acidic) Basically, pH is a measure of the amount of lime (calcium) contained in your soil.

Arbor-An Arbor is a piece of framework that is designed to provide shade or a sitting area in the garden. They are usually made from wood or lattice, which also serves as a structure for climbing vines and other plants.

Back Flow Preventer- Valve that allows water to flow only in one direction. Prevents backflow of water into the main water line, preventing contamination.

Backfill-Soil used to fill a planting hole after the plant has been positioned. Amended soil is often used as backfill.

Bare Root-Plants offered for sale which have had all of the soil removed from their roots.

Bedding Plant-Plants (mainly annuals), nursery grown and suitable for growing in beds. Quick, colorful flowers.

Blower-a machine for supplying air at a moderate pressure, as to supply forced drafts or supercharge.

Blowing-To move along, carried by or as by the wind. Blow off walks, porches, driveways.

Broadcast-To scatter seed, fertilizer or other material over the ground.

Broadleaf Weeds-Weeds, such as dandelion, clover, and chickweed, which take resources from turf and disrupt the texture of the lawn.

Bud-Early stages of development of a flower or plant growth.

Bulb-The thickened underground storage organ of the group of perennials which includes daffodils and tulips.

Caliper-The diameter of a tree trunk measured.

Centipede-Slow growing grass, centipede grass spreads through stolons, and forms a dense turf. Requires less mowing, doesn’t grow well if not supplied with adequate moisture. Good high traffic turf.

Compost-A soil product created from decomposed garden material, used in flower beds to add nutrients and encourage good growth.

Concrete Pavers-These are commonly used as hardscapes throughout landscaping. They are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes to suit any particular pattern and style.

Conifer-A group of plants, mostly evergreen, that produce their seeds in a cone.

Container Stock-Trees or shrubs packaged with their roots and growing medium in a plastic or peat-fiber container.

Core Aerating-Core aeration is the process of mechanically removing plugs of soil and thatch from a lawn. Core aeration reduces soil compaction.

Crabgrass-Grass with branching stems that root freely; often appears with purplish tones and spreads easily, crowding out other turf and disrupting the uniform presentation of your lawn.

Curbing-This is generally used around the edging of garden beds and landscaping. It creates a barrier between gardens and hardscapes. For example: it will help contain soil from traveling through to driveways. Concrete is a curbing material used commonly in the landscaping industry.

Cutting in beds-To cut a bed edge or definition between turf and beds by manual labor or by machine.

Deciduous-A plant that loses its leaves in the winter at once.

Decking-This is an addition to a residential home or pool area. It is raised up off ground level and creates the perfect setting in the landscaping. Timber and imitation timbers are commonly used to build decks.

Drainage-Drainage in landscaping helps to keep the gardens free from flooding and over watering. 

Drip irrigation-Controlled slow release delivery of water directly to individual plants through a network of tubes or pipes. Helps with preventing waste of water usage.

Edging-Material that forms a barrier or is placed along an edge or border to define or create stability. Edging helps to keep paved surfaces clean and free of debris, dirt and leaves. Edging creates a detailed appearance.

Evergreen-(of trees, shrubs, etc.) having green leaves throughout the entire year, the leaves of the past season not being shed until after the new foliage has been completely formed.

Fairy Ring-This is a circular ring of mushrooms, occurring naturally in lawns, with dark green grass in the center. Mushroom spores spawn underground, fanning out in all directions in search of nutrients.

Fence Gate-A fence gate is installed onto a fence which allows homeowners and guests to access the property either by car or foot. Fence gates also provide greater protection from unwanted guests.

Fence-Fences are used in landscaping to create privacy and boundary lines between properties and also to enhance the look of the property. Many different materials can be used such as: wood, iron, aluminum and vinyl.

Fertilization-The proper application of the proper amount of fertilizer encourages growth and flowering in turf and plants. It is also known as "feeding”.

Fertilizer-Organic or inorganic compounds that promote growth in plants by providing major nutrients and micronutrients.

Fire Ants-These creatures have a painful sting that can be deadly to small animals or hypersensitive humans. They are most commonly found in the southern United States.

Fleas-These tiny insects are not harmful to lawns but are a nuisance and a health problem for humans and pets since they feed on the blood of mammals.

Flowers-Flowers are defined as a plant which blooms through a certain time of the year or all year round.
